Canterbury is delighted to have signed New Zealand’s Women’s Rugby star, Eloise Blackwell, as a brand ambassador.

ONE OF A rare breed who grew up on Great Barrier Island, Eloise Blackwell has, since her 2011 debut for New Zealand, become a mainstay of the Black Ferns pack, following in the shoes of great second-rowers such as Vicky Heighway and Monalisa Codling.

Blackwell has also been a vital member, latterly as captain, of the Auckland Storm since 2009 and by the end of the 2020 season she had a good strike rate, for a lock, of 14 tries in 64 games for the province.

The Ponsonby club lock has developed into a top international player, strong in contact, mobile around the field and accurate in the air, be it for kickoffs or lineouts.

Blackwell has strung together several high quality seasons for the Black Ferns. In 2018, she scored a try in the second Test in front of a home Auckland crowd at Eden Park. In 2019, she started in all six Tests for the Black Ferns, scoring tries against Canada, USA and Australia, the latter again in front of her home crowd.

Blackwell, who has played 43 test matches for New Zealand, and scored 10 tries, is among the best female rugby players in the world, famous for her powerful, dynamic game and physicality, playing from lock.

An Auckland high school teacher, Blackwell is admired for her authentic, warm, down-to-earth personality and epitomises the values for which Canterbury also stands.

“I’m so happy to have signed with Canterbury,” says Blackwell. “As a Kiwi rugby player, I know the deep history Canterbury has with both the game and New Zealand as a whole. I’m delighted to represent such an iconic New Zealand brand ahead of getting to defend the World Cup on home soil in 2022.”

Eloise is a “perfect fit” ambassador and we are proud to support women in sport- in particular Rugby which is the foundation of our brand – role models like Eloise are important in inspiring young women in sport.”
