THE WINNING MENTALITY

Watching sporting greats succeed time after time can often cause you to wonder how it is they do it, with the ability to remain focused in stressful situations and outperform their rivals with military precision and stamina.

Not all of us are blessed with physical gifts of strength, speed or endurance, however the ability to effectively manage emotional state has proven power to improve your chances of succeeding on the pitch and beyond.

According to a study from Dr Jim Afremow, the author of The Champion’s Mind – How Great Athletes Think, Train and Thrive, states that ‘Even amongst the most elite performers, certain athletes stand out as a cut above the rest. These athletes prove that raw athletic ability doesn’t necessarily translate to a superior on-field experience – it’s the mental game that matters most.’

Read our steps below to make sure you are giving you and your team the very best chance of success.

5 STEPS TO GET ‘GAME READY’

1) DON’T TAKE OFF-FIELD ISSUES ON-FIELD
Get into the habit of leaving personal issues behind prior to game play, many players find using a trigger such as putting on your boots or walking onto the pitch, as the time they leave personal issues behind.

2) VISUALISATION
Believe in yourself, in your skill and your ability to succeed.

If playing on a team, if you don’t genuinely believe that you can win, why should your team mates? Negativity can seriously stunt your abilities, and so it is vital to personally pep yourself up, or perhaps hold a positive ‘team talk’ before the game and at half time.

3) SET-BACK, WHAT SET-BACK?
Demotion, injury, performance plateau – whatever it may be acknowledge it and move on.

From negativity can come great opportunity, the chance to prove yourself and overcome a hurdle that inspires others.

4) FAIL TO PREPARE – PREPARE TO FAIL
Lack of preparation can seriously affect physical performance but also your emotional state.

Knowing you have done all you can do to prepare, sets you up to perform at your best.
Something as simple as hydration, eating well and having you kit clean and ready will allow your focuses to remain elsewhere – on performance.

5) ONE KIT, ONE GOAL

Have pride in your team and your appearance – confidence translates into positive body language, all the better for throwing your opposition off!
